Each month, I read a book written by a Chinese author. This month’s book is The Civil Servant’s Notebook by Wang Xiaofang (2009). It falls under an increasingly popular form, officialdom fiction, and tells the story of a mayoral election in Dongzhou City. It’s a cunning satire of the political system in China, rife with thievery, corruption, and seduction. A very timely read considering the recent indictment and life sentencing of Bo Xilai, the new Politburo’s poster-boy for their anti-corruption campaign.
